As a 1956 geology graduate from the U of I, I don't remember many of my professors' names. But I do remember the engineering drawing class I took from Professor Dobrovolny! I didn't realize at the time what an accomplished gentleman he was (we undergraduates seldom do)! I would like to join with his friends and family in celebrating his wonderful and productive life!

Jerry S. Dobrovolny was a lion, strong and direct, and the University of Illinois and the Department formerly known as General Engineering, were and are better places for his leadership. I was hired in 1990, just following Jerry's retirement from the headship, but his irregular visits to my office were a highlight of the otherwise turbulent times that followed his leaving. During those visits Jerry always counseled strong and forceful action for both the idea and execution of the kind of engineering education embodied in GE. I don't know that I always lived up to his high expectations, but his clear vision was and remains a constant companion. Among other honors, being named the first Dobrovolny professor was particularly special and I list it proudly still. Mary Ann and I pass along our condolences to Joan and Jerry's surviving family. We will miss him.

I am so glad to have known and been influenced by Jerry. I see from his bio information that Jerry gave birth to the GE Dept the same year that I was born. I did my BS and MS in GE with Jerry at the helm, graduating in 1987, the year he retired. He had a profound influence on my career and my thoughts as an engineer. I now run the Senior Design Program, which Jerry helped to start back in the 60’s. About 12 years ago Jerry asked me, “Harry, do you have it all under control?” I answered, “Jerry, control is an illusion, it’s managed chaos!” Jerry knew this very well. He was a great manager, and a great visionary and leader.

I am very sorry for you loss and am glad that Jerry had plenty of time to say goodbye to his dear family. He will be greatly missed. Isa 35:6-10
