James L. Hitchins

James Lyle Hitchins, 91, of Mahomet, passed away on Wednesday September 20 at home.

Jim was born May 29, 1926 in Dewey, the son of Philip and Emma Hitchins. He married Charlotte Hauge on July 10, 1949 at the Lutheran Church in Newark, IL.

He was preceded in death by his parents, one son David, two brothers F. Howard Hitchins and Lloyd Hitchins, one sister Phyllis Hunsicker.

Together Jim and Charlotte raised two sons, David (deceased), Thomas (Amy) Hitchins and two daughters Charlene (Jason, deceased) Roush and Barbara (Scot) Miller.

They have five grandchildren and four great-grandchild.

Jim was a proud veteran and served in the Army from October 1944-August 1947. He earned the rank of Tec/5 and was stationed on the Philippine Islands and Japan, where he earned a Combat Infantryman's Badge.

Jim worked as a carpenter and roofer most of his life. He was an active member of Mahomet American Legion Post #1015 and served on the Honor Guard for many years.

There will be a visitation from 2:00-4:00 on Sunday September 24 at Blair-Owens Funeral Home (102 E. Dunbar) in Mahomet. The funeral service will be at 10:00 Monday. September 25 at Lutheran Church (410 Andover Dr.)of Mahomet. Burial will be at Grandview Memorial Gardens in Champaign.
