Thomas Benjamin Sparks, 86, of Monticello, died at 12:50 a.m., November 7, 2011 at the Piatt County Nursing Home, Monticello.
A Memorial service will be held at 1:00 p.m. Wednesday, November 9, 2011 at the Christ Lutheran Church, Monticello with Pastor Micah Garnett officiating. Visitation will be held from 6:00-8:00 p.m, Tuesday, November 8, 2011 at the Christ Lutheran Church, Monticello. Interment will be in Monticello Township Cemetery. Mackey-Wright Funeral Home is handling the arrangements.
Tom was born December 31, 1924 in Linden, N.J. the son of Thomas V. and Florence E. (Groessle) Sparks. He married Edith Engelhardt on June 16, 1946 in Elkhart, IN.
Survivors include his wife, Edith Sparks of Monticello; two sons, Scott Sparks (Pamela) of Roswell, GA and Randall Sparks (Lily) of Savannah, GA, one daughter; Beth Benson (Eric, deceased) of Monticello, eight grandchildren; Lisa Guethlein, Lance Sparks, Matthew Sparks, Shane Benson, Joshua Sparks, Rebecca Sparks, Ross Sparks, and Robin Jensen, one step-grandchild; Qifeng Li, seven great grandchildren; Jayde Sparks, Laura Guethlein, Kelly Guethlein, Jackson Sparks, Jesse Sparks, Russell Sparks, and Shaye Jensen, one sister; Florence Washburn of Tulsa, OK. He was preceded in death by his parents and one brother Martin Sparks.
Tom served in the U.S. Navy 1942-46 in WW II. He worked in sales and marketing and retired from Elan Pharmaceutical Research Company. He was a member and former president of the Christ Lutheran Church, Monticello, Monticello Rotary Club, American Legion, Academy of Model Aeronautics, and Mariner-Marlin Association.
