Sunny Jay Obituary

On the afternoon of Tuesday, December 19th Sunny Jay, 77, of Mahomet, Illinois passed away at Carle Hospital surrounded by loved ones.

Connie Sue Curry “Sunny” was born October 24, 1946, in Monticello, Illinois, the daughter of Oscar and June Curry. After graduating from Monticello High School in 1964, she married Hal Barnhart in 1967. They were married for 11 years and had two children, Angie and Clay. On October 22, 1996, Sunny married John Jay; after fate brought them together a few years earlier during a sunset combine ride. They were married happily for 23 years until his death in December 2019.

Ms. Sunny would always ask, “What would you do for free?”, when helping others search for their passion. Sunny found this passion and determination in her work too. She received her cosmetology degree where she opened Creative Corner Hair Salon. After a change in direction, she studied early childhood development and psychology at Parkland College and Illinois Wesleyan University.  She then opened Sunrise School with Joyce Evans, Debbie Shoemaker, and Marsha Clemens.

After working with children for a while she found her true calling and decided to open a private Christian preschool named Sunrise Farmhouse. She taught preschool out of her home for over 30 years where she educated 3 to 5-year-olds how to treat everyone with kindness, how to pour Kool-Aid out of glass pitchers, how to water and care for plants, how to persevere, and so much more. She gave her students these responsibilities which allowed the preschoolers to feel important, loved, and understood. No one ever left Sunrise Farmhouse Preschool unloved and without your name written on a rock, in the Angel Garden.

Her loving and friendly attitude towards everyone she met (she knew no strangers) made anyone feel welcome in her presence. Her impact on Mahomet through Sunrise families, Cornbelt Fire Department, and even people just walking by her house will never be forgotten.

She is survived by her children, Angie (Mark) Bundy, Clay (Amy) Barnhart, John Jay II, and Bill (Jill) Jay; eleven grandchildren, Ryne Bundy, Konnor (Danielle) Bundy, Alek Bundy, Cole Barnhart, Megan Barnhart, Tylor Bundy, Audrie Bundy, Cooper Jay, Cody Barnhart, Kenzie Bundy, and Dustyn Bundy; her precious dog, Tobi Jay. Sunny is also survived by two sisters, Bonnie (Cecil) Harriss, of Columbia, Illinois, and Carrol (Russ) Lake, of Champaign, Illinois.

Sunny is preceded in death by her parents, Oscar and June Curry; husband, John Jay; daughter-in-law, Lorie Deck-Jay.

A visitation will be held Friday, December 22, from 4pm to 6pm at Blair-Owens Funeral Home, 102 East Dunbar St. Mahomet. The funeral service will be Saturday, December 23, at 10 am at Blair-Owens Funeral Home. Burial will be at Riverside Cemetery, Mahomet.
