Stephen A. Winters, 77, of Champaign, died the evening of Tuesday May 12 at Carle Foundation Hospital.
Steve was born on April 8, 1949 in Champaign, a son of Arthur and Doris (Reeder) Winters. After graduating from Champaign Central High School, Steve enlisted in the US Army and honorably served until 1973. While enlisted and serving in the Vietnam War, Steve earned 2 bronze service stars, a purple heart, Vietnam Service Medal, National Defense Service Medal and the Combat Infantry Badge. Upon discharge, Steve returned to Champaign where he attended trade school and later became a carpenter. He married Sandy Heiser in Champaign on Oct 30, 1976. Most recently, Steve worked at IDOT earning retirement in 1999. Whether it was hunting, fishing or gardening, Steve enjoyed being active and spent much of his retirement years outside. His family was very important to him and he loved to spend time with them.
He is survived by his wife, Sandy; 2 children, Angie (Adam) Crawford of Champaign and Stephen (Lisa) Winters of Tolono; 2 grandchildren, Kynnedi Schweighart and Austin Winters; along with 2 brothers, Daniel and Scott Winters.
A Celebration of Life will be held at a later date.
