Stephen Moore

Stephen “Steve” David Moore, 78, of Champaign passed away peacefully at the VA Medical Center in Danville, on the morning of Saturday, May 23, 2026.

He is survived by the love of his life, his wife of 58 years, Lorena “Rena” Moore; children, Lance (Shay) Moore of Tolono, Ryan (Jessica) Moore of Champaign and Stephanie Moore of Champaign; five grandchildren, Jacksyn, Brecken, Blake, Elliot and Julia; brother Robert Miller; sisters, Christina Cragg and Teresa Lanum; and stepsisters, Sally Lee and Donna Heise.

He was preceded in death by his father, David Kenneth Moore; his mother, Shirley Ann Schultz; brothers, Thomas Moore and Kenneth Moore; and sister Pamela Osterbur. 

He graduated from Central High School in 1966 and proudly served in the U.S. Air Force from 1967–1971 as an aircraft mechanic specializing in pneudraulics. Following his military service, he worked for 20 years as an engineering aide with Northern Illinois Water Corporation while also managing several rental properties. 

Known for his strong work ethic and willingness to help others, he built the family home where he lived for 44 years, as well as the neighboring home for his mother-in-law. He enjoyed working with his hands, learning new things, and spending time outdoors—especially fishing with friends or quietly enjoying the peace of nature. Honest and straightforward, he was known for calling things as he saw them while showing remarkable patience and kindness toward others. It was often said that you never heard anyone speak a bad word about him. He will be remembered for his good nature, quick wit, generosity, and caring heart.

Visitation will be held at Owens Funeral Home from 10 to 11:30 a.m. on Wednesday, June 3; friends and family may offer condolences and greet the family. Steve was cremated, and a graveside service will follow at Grandview Memorial Gardens, where military rites will be accorded. A celebration of life will then be held following services until 4 p.m. at the Elks Lodge, 903 N. Dunlap Ave., Savoy.
