Sara Mason

Sara Elizabeth Mason, 26, of Mahomet, died on Dec. 18, 2024, at home. 

Friends may greet the family from 3-7 p.m. Friday, Dec. 27, at Mahomet Christian Church, 908 N. Lake of the Woods Road, Mahomet. Burial will be private. 

Sara was born on Aug. 13, 1998, in Urbana, to Randy and Janis (Stauffer) Mason. She was preceded in death by her maternal grandfather, Bill Stauffer, and her paternal grandfather, Bob Mason, along with two uncles and a cousin. Sara's mother, Jan, and her brother, Caleb, died along with her on Dec. 18. 

She is survived by her father, Randy (Veronica) of Mexico; maternal grandmother, Lucille Stauffer; paternal grandmother, Jean Mason; six aunts and five uncles, along with many cousins and friends too numerous to count. 

Sara was a 2016 graduate of Mahomet-Seymour High School, where she played clarinet in the marching band and participated in plays and musicals as part of the drama club. Sara was an incredibly bright individual that received a scholarship to attend the UI, earning her bachelor’s degree in Natural Resources and Environmental Studies in 2020. Sara worked for the department University Payables at the University of Illinois as an undergraduate and was working as a researcher for the Illinois Natural History Survey, cataloging bugs, plants, and fish.  

Sara loved all living things including bugs, plants, and especially the family dogs Gunner and Georgia and her cat Jenna. Sara was known for her wide-ranging knowledge of animal facts that she joyfully shared with others. This included educating fellow zoo visitors at age 12 (she was asked if she was an employee) and beginning the tradition of sharing animal facts at the Monday night 4-H sorority house dinner. This tradition is so beloved that it continues on at the sorority today. Sara’s friends and family will miss her super funny, silly personality. She was always very caring and was a great artist.
