Peter Davis

Peter F. Davis, age 79, longtime owner and operator of Champaign Cycle Co., passed away on Monday, April 20, 2026.  He had dealt stoically with the worsening symptoms of Parkinson’s Disease for several years and continued to be active, fiercely independent, and making plans for his future.  He will be sorely missed by his many friends and family.

Peter was buried with a private ceremony at Eastlawn Cemetery in Urbana.  His family is planning a Memorial Service to take place later this summer.

Peter was born on March 23, 1947, to Alice May and Eldon E. Davis in Dubuque, Iowa, the third of five children.  He is survived by his wife, Susan Meinkoth, his four siblings, Ellen, Jeff, Jon and Peg, his son, Alex Hegeman-Davis, his daughter-in-law, Raya and their two boys, Tavish and Ciaran.  He is also survived by several stepchildren and step grandchildren.  He was a thoughtful and loving grandparent.

Peter had many talents that he liked to use to help others.  He was naturally quite mechanically inclined and could figure out how to fix most anything.  When he would visit family and friends scattered across the country, he would bring his toolbox and fix anything that needed repair.  This skill was most appreciated by his siblings!  That habit was so much a part of who he was that he continued it to the end.  The toolbox is still in his car, just in case.

He was best known by many in this area as a strong voice for bicycle riding and bicycle safety.  He enjoyed cycling himself and was a strong rider.  He wanted to spread that love of cycling, and he personally led a weekly beginner-level adult ride from the store for many years.  Over the years, he organized and promoted many bike rides in Champaign County and taught many local riders how to better adjust their bikes for comfort, and how to ride safely, and for longer distances on the less traveled country roads around Champaign-Urbana.
