Mary P. Dighton, age 88, a former resident of Monticello, died Tuesday, January 16, 2007, at Hillwood Home in Bethesda, MD, after a long illness.
Funeral mass will be held at 10:30 AM, Monday, January 22, 2007 at the St. Philomena Catholic Church 1301 N. Market St. in Monticello, IL with Fr. Pat DeMuelemeester officiating. Visitation will be from 2:00 to 4:00 PM, Sunday, January 21, 2007 at the Mackey-Wright Funeral Home in Monticello with a Rosary service at 4:00 PM. Interment will be in the Monticello Township Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to the Alzheimers Association 225 N. Michigan Ave. 17th Floor Chicago, IL 60601-7633.
Mrs. Dighton was born August 27, 1918 in Monticello, IL the daughter of Daniel and Teresa (Gunning) Pembroke. She married Henry T. Dighton on May 20, 1949 in Monticello. He passed away in 1960.
Surviving are her daughter; Catherine Bucknam of Arlington, VA, sons; Dennis Dighton of Eureka, IL, Christopher Dighton of Monticello, IL, Brian Dighton of Arlington, VA and Daniel Dighton of Chicago, IL.; two grandchildren (Desiree and Jonathan Dighton) and one great grandchild (Ethan); her brother Martin Pembroke of Savoy, IL, and sisters Helen Day of Syracuse, NY, and Isabel Platz of Monticello, IL.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Henry, and a son, Jeffrey.
Mrs. Dighton graduated from St. Johns School of Nursing in Springfield, IL in 1939. She served in the U.S. Navy as a nurse from 1943-1948 and was a member of the China Marine Association. After retiring as a nurse at St. Johns Hospital in Springfield, Mrs. Dighton volunteered for many years at the hospital. She was a member of St. Philomenas Catholic Church of Monticello and St. Agnes Catholic Church of Springfield.
