Marvin Scheuermann Obituary
Marvin Leroy Scheuermann, 80, passed away in peace on November 18, 2010 in Monticello Illinois. Marvin was born on April 10, 1930 in Carthage, Illinois. The son of the late Louis Scheuermann and Mary (Hardy) Scheuermann, Marvin grew up surrounded by loving brothers Loren, Kenneth and Richard; and sisters Doris, Nellie, Ruth, Rose, and Pat.
After graduation from Carthage High School, Marvin enlisted with the United States Navy. With skills learned from his father, he served with distinction as a member of the Navy Construction Battalion (Seabees), including stations in the Philippines and Hawaii. After returning from the service, Marvin earned a Bachelor of Science degree from Western Illinois University.
Marvin and Dorma Jean Preston of Oakley, Illinois were then married, and set upon a journey together that was filled with love, laughter, family and accomplishment.
Marvin taught industrial arts and building trades at Galesburg and Warsaw, Illinois. For ten years, he guided students to promising careers, evidenced by the number of students who returned to share their successes with him. Also during this time, Marvin and Jean started their family with their first two children, Brenda and Mark. The family then relocated to Monticello, Illinois to establish a custom home building business. While in Monticello, son Todd was born.
Over the years, through skill, uncompromising standards, unparalled work ethic, and love for his work, Marvin built a business that was renowned for impeccable quality. Throughout Monticello and the surrounding area, scores of homes will stand for generations as a legacy of his work.
Marvin was dedicated to work and to family, but enjoyed a number of other activities. He was a professional caliber billiards player, and also enjoyed bowling and following University of Illinois athletics. Marvin remained a boy at heart throughout his life, bringing joy to all he met with his playful antics, creative stories, and humor. Children of all ages were drawn to Marvin, and those who knew him carry fond memories of his games, jokes, tricks, life lessons, and caring.
Marvin will always be remembered for commitment to family, love for his work, and for his good nature that brought a smile to all those around him. As a loving and faithful husband, he was dedicated to providing support and opportunity for his family. As a father, he brought joy to his children with love, encouragement, and play, while serving as a role model by living a life of compassion and integrity. He was also the ultimate teacher: he found something to teach his children in virtually every activity. As a son, brother, uncle, cousin, friend, neighbor or employer, he was always ready to lend a hand or bring a smile in time of need.
Marvin is survived by wife Jean Scheuermann of Monticello, Illinois; daughter Brenda Scheuermann of Wimberley, Texas; son Mark Scheuermann of Monticello; son Todd Scheuermann of Albany, New York; grandchildren Colin Scott, Benjamin Jacobs, Leah Jacobs, Abigail Scheuermann, Hunter Scheuermann, Halle Kelly, and Harrison Scheuermann; and great-grandson Jacob Scott. Marvin is also survived by brothers Loren, Kenneth and Richard; and sisters Ruth, Nellie, Rose, and Pat. Marvin was preceded in death by his father, mother, and beloved sister Doris.
Marvin was blessed with talent, patience, a kind heart, quick wit, and the ability to make those around him happy. He was also blessed with the kindness and support of countless others throughout his life. While it is impossible to thank all those who helped in his journey, the family would like to acknowledge son-in-law William Jacobs and daughters-in-law Karen Hunter and Kim Scheuermann for their love and support since joining the family. In addition, special thanks to the many family members for the regular visits over the last seven years. The family also extends its profound gratitude to the staff of the Piatt County Nursing Home, for providing care that sustained Marvin and allowed him to see the growth and success of his family. We will never be able to adequately express our appreciation for their loving care.
Graveside services arranged by Mackey-Wright Funeral Home will be held on November 20, 2010 at 11 AM at the Monticello Township Cemetery. A remembrance gathering at the Monticello Community Center (Allerton Public Library), located at 201 North State Street will follow the service.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that contributions in Marvins name be sent to the Piatt County Nursing Home Staff Scholarship Fund, P.O. Box 410, Monticello, IL 61856.
