Marvin A. McBroom

Marvin A. McBroom quietly passed away on September 11, 2008 at Palm Terrace, Mattoon, Illinois.
Marvin was born on December 24, 1928 in Hanna City, Illinois the only son of Dorsey T. and R. Ruth Karstetter McBroom.
Marvin spent his early years in Hanna City, Illinois, moving with his parents to Oxford, Indiana in 1934. Oxford held wonderful memories. In 1946, Marvin's senior year of playing high school basketball, the team played in the Indiana "Sweet Sixteen" tournament - a night to remember!
After graduating from Oxford in 1946, Marvin attended Indiana University in Bloomington. He then graduated from Chicago Tech with a degree in Building and Design.
On December 12, 1948, Marvin married Phyllis R. Ritenour, in Oxford, Indiana.
Marvin and Phyllis moved to Potomac, Illinois to go into business with his father - opening McBroom and Son Lumber Yard. They had a wonderful crew of carpenters and craftsmen who built several homes and commercial buildings in the east central Illinois area.
Marvin was active in the community serving on both the High School and Grade School boards as president. He was also active in Lions Club, Potomac United Methodist Church, Little League coach and other community organizations. He was a member of the Illinois Lumberman's Association and a licensed Illinois Real Estate Broker.
Marvin was an avid fan of the High School basketball team in Potomac. More notably, Marvin was known for his sideline comments to the referee's during heated Potomac and Armstrong games! He was a diehard Cub fan, and supporter of Indiana University basketball teams.
Marvin was involved for several years in the Potomac "Follies", the Summer Festival, Lions Club Minstrels, as well as, the community Halloween parade and Santa's arrival in town.
In 1972, Marvin and Phyllis settled in Prescott, Arizona. Marvin owned and operated Scott's Carpeting in Prescott for over 30 years. In 2002, Marvin moved to Monticello, Illinois to be close to family. During his years in Prescott, Marvin was active in the Rotary, Jaycees and the Presbyterian Church. He dearly loved Arizona and the West.
One of Marvin's dreams was to fish in Alaska, "the last frontier". Marvin and his son-in-law Don, accomplished this 8 times. Marvin was 68 years young on his first Alaskan trip. The two camped and floated an obscure river for 10 days at a time. Bears, beavers, salmon and caribou were part of the natural Alaskan scenery. As a young man, Marvin's dad, Dorsey would say to him -- "Marvin, one day you and I are going to fish Alaska". We now know that the two of them are now fishing together on the "high bank hole" in Alaska. God Speed.
Marvin leaves behind his 3 children, Pamela (Don) Ashcraft of Monticello, Illinois, Sara (Dave) Moll of Glendale, Arizona and Mike McBroom of San Diego, California. Marvin leaves behind 7 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren. Also surviving, is his aunt, Wanda McBroom Terry of Peoria, Illinois and many loving cousins.
Marvin was preceded in death by his father, Dorsey; mother Ruth; and wife Phyllis.
Graveside services will be held Friday, September 19, at 10:30 AM at Potomac Township Cemetery, Potomac, Illinois. A celebration honoring Marvin's life will follow at the Potomac United Methodist Church. Rev. Dr. Timothy Bauler, Monticello First Presbyterian Church will conduct the service. Mackey-Wright Funeral Home in Monticello is handling the arrangements.
Memorials may be made to the First Presbyterian Church of Monticello, Faith-in-Action -Piatt County, Alzheimer's Research, or Kirby Hospital Auxiliary.
