Mabel R. Gifford, 91, of Monticello passed away at 5:16 AM, Saturday, March 27, 2010 at Kirby Hospital, Monticello.
Funeral service will be held at 1:00 PM, Thursday, April 1, 2010 at the Mackey-Wright Funeral Home. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service. Interment will be in Grandview Memorial Gardens.
Mabel was born August 24, 1918 in Iroquois County, IL the daughter of Roy R. and Irene (Sandhagen) Doan. She married Lee L. Moodie on April 9, 1939 in Paxton, he died in 1942. She then married William R. Gifford on May 23, 1948 in Paxton. He died August 6, 1992.
Survivors include a nephew; Ronald G. Doan of El Paso, TX, a niece; Nancy Collins of Mamou, LA, and a cousin; Evelyn Plackett of Paxton. Mabel was preceded in death by her parents, husbands, 1 brother, 1 sister and 2 half-brothers.
Mabel worked as a secretary for Judge Samuel Ludlow. She was also co-proprietor of the Annex Cafe in Paxton, she retired from the University of Illinois where she worked in admissions and records, and she also worked for McHenry Phillips 66 Oil Company. Mabel was a member of the Paxton United Methodist Church, Auxiliary VFW Post #630 of Urbana, Royal Neighbors of America, and the Womens International Bowling Association. She enjoyed bowling, dancing, fishing, camping, gardening, cards, puzzles, and loved cats and all animals.
Memorials may be made to the Piatt County Nursing Home or the United Methodist Church of Paxton.
