Lowell D. Estes of Mahomet, formerly of Dewey, passed peacefully on Saturday, January 4, 2025, at Goldwater Care in Gibson City. The Funeral Service will be at 11:00am on Saturday January 11 at Blair-Owens Funeral Home (102 E. Dunbar) in Mahomet, with the visitation one hour prior to the service. Burial will be at Shiloh Cemetery in Mahomet. Military rites will be accorded by Mahomet American Legion Post #1015.
He was born on August 2, 1932, to Wiley and Dorothy (Asher) Estes. Lowell was preceded in death by two brothers, James and Norman Estes; a sister, Lavonne Wright; a son, G. Wayne Harvey; and a grandson, Andrew Davis.
He married Freida Evans Harvey on July 2, 1977. She survives, along with a brother, Lyndon Estes and many nieces and nephews. He is also survived by a daughter Jackie Harvey (Neal) Davis, a son Thomas Harvey; six grandchildren, Amanda Harvey (Matt) Mckee, Curtis (Tracy) Harvey, Jeremy (Brianne) Davis, Sarah Davis (John) Castranio, Kendall (Tom) Santucci, Lucas (Leah) Harvey; a daughter-in-law, Susan Harvey; and five great-grandchildren, Alex and Dylan Thomas and Jack, River and Rose Castranio.
Lowell was baptized and grew up attending Shiloh United Methodist Church. He served as Chairman of the Board for several years. He took great pride in helping maintain the church building and grounds, always willing to help however he was needed.
Lowell graduated from Fisher High School in 1950 and served in the U. S. Army for two years. He farmed in the Dewey-Fisher area all his life and sold Golden Harvest seed for several years. He was a Township Tax Assessor for thirty-five years and served on the Champaign County Zoning Board for several years. Lowell belonged to the Fisher Lion’s Club, was a Township Drainage Commissioner for several years, and ran the Horse Show at the Fisher Fair for a number of years. He was very proud of the large collection of arrowheads and Indian artifacts he unearthed over the years while working the land on his farm.
Lowell was a pillar of the community, living his life with faith and integrity and a love for the earth. He will be greatly missed by those who loved and admired him.
The family would like to thank Goldwater Care in Gibson City for taking care of him the last years of his life and Hospice who oversaw his care these last few weeks.
