Loretta M. Bennett

Loretta M. Bennett was born on March 20, 1916, the daughter of Milton and Rose (Brown) Vaughn, in Monticello, Illinois and died on August 11, 2009 at the age of 93 at the Bement Health Care Center, Bement, Illinois. She never much cared for her name so her family called her Retty.
Funeral services for Loretta will be Sunday, August 16, 2009 at the Mackey-Wright Funeral Home at 2:00 P.M. with Rev. Timothy Bauler officiating. Visitation will be 1:00 to 2:00 on Sunday.
At the age of fifteen she married Joe Bennett Sr. in Monticello and had three children before her twentieth birthday.
They bought an old building at the edge of town that had been an old cheese factory and turned it into a home to hold the many antiques they collected together. Before it was a popular trend, she taught herself how to paint, wallpaper, make slipcovers, tear out solid eighteen inch thick brick walls, and carpenter-once sawing up her yardstick when she needed a small, thin board!
She loved pretty dresses, copper tea kettles, marshmallow candy, the color red and her Siamese cat Samantha. All her life she had a great passion for reading. She always had her hair done and was never without a hankie. A member of the Jolly Club for over fifty years, she really enjoyed playing Bunco.
Loretta was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, four brothers, one sister, two sons-in-law, and one grandson. Survivors include her son Joe Bennett Jr. and his wife Peggy of North Carolina, and her daughters Gypsy Redmond of Decatur, and Sandra Schweighart of Monticello, eight grandchildren, nineteen great grandchildren, and six great great grandchildren.
Memorials may be made to the Bement Health Care Center where the staff was so very good to her.
She was a kind, wonderful lady- she was our mom and we loved her so very much
