Loren Sorensen

Loren 'Scoop' Sorensen, 88, formerly of Mahomet, died at 7:31pm on June 22, 2026 at Amber Glen Memory Care in Urbana.  In accordance with family wishes, he was cremated and his cremated remains will be scattered in a private ceremony.

Loren was born on December 5, 1937 in Gardner, IL, a son of Lyle and Elda Sorensen.  Loren went to Gardner South Wilmington (GSW) High School and married his sweetheart, Joanne Vigna on May 16, 1959.  She survives and resides in Champaign.

Other survivors include: three sons, Mark (Michelle) Sorensen, Jeff (Stephanie) Sorensen, Alan Sorensen and one daughter, Jill (Jim) Purcell; grandchildren, Abbie Bussey, Adam Sorensen, Clark Sorensen, Blake Sorensen, Emilee Magsamen, Olivia Sorensen, Kate Purcell, Mike Purcell, Sarah Purcell; great-grandchildren, Mattis Bussey, Bowen Bussey and Will Sorensen.  

Scoop was a Volunteer Fireman, School Board Treasurer at GSW and a Deacon at Church of Hope.

He started working at the Caterpillar Tractor Company at the age of 18 in Joliet, IL and was later transferred to both Burlington and Davenport, IA, earning retirement in 1987.  

He and Joanne relocated to Mahomet in 2000, where he worked for the Champaign County Forest Preserve and Lake of the Woods Golf Course from 2002-2016.  He always took pride in keeping the fairways trimmed and looking good.  

Loren also worked for the University of Illinois from 2005-2019, where he worked the gates at both Football games and serving as an Usher at Volleyball games.  He loved that job and was always an Illini fan, frequently sporting an orange jacket or sweatshirt.
