Lawrence Marquiss Obituary

Lawrence Earl (L.E.) Marquiss, 91, of Monticello, died at 8:40 p.m., July 30, 2012 at Carle Foundation Hospital, Urbana. Graveside services will be held at 10:30 a.m., Monday, August 6, 2012 at Monticello Township Cemetery with Rev. Steve Ingram officiating.
Mr. Marquiss was born May 12, 1921, in Deland, IL, son of Paul A. and Oraella Hettinger Marquiss. He married Alice Margaret Benson on December 26, 1942, in St. Charles, MO. She preceded him in death on July 26, 1997. He later married Margaret Creighton who preceded him in death.
Surviving are four daughters; Sandra (Walter) Thompson of Weatherford, TX, Connie (Terry) Hendrix of Monticello, Patricia (Dan) Gale of Monticello, and Debra Marquiss. Surviving grandchildren include: Bryan (Lois) Gale of Tucson, AZ, Terra (Peggy) Hendrix of Paxton, IL, Tabetha (Mikel) Thomas of Monticello, Abby (Jamie) Puckett of St. Charles, MO, Sara Winterbottom, Amber (Travis) Oakey of Springville, UT, and Marybeth Winterbottom of Cocoa Beach, FL. Great grandchildren include: Shelby and Tiler Thomas, Greysen, Aly and Garrett Puckett, Betsy Hendrix, and Austyn Oakey. Surviving sisters are Maxine McPheeters of Monticello and Bette Hopper of Savoy. He was preceded in death by two brothers (Allen and Charles Marquiss) and one sister (Juanita Beebe).
Mr. Marquiss was a retired farmer, member of the BPOE Decatur Elks Club, and was an aviation enthusiast, owning and flying Cessna planes. He built and owned some of the first multi-unit free standing apartment buildings in Monticello. Until 2006 he was a part time driver for Poling Chevrolet and Bill Abbott dealerships.
