Julian Phelps

Julian Phelps, 97, of Phoenix, Arizona, passed away on Friday, May 15, 2026 at Carle Foundation Hospital in Urbana, Illinois.

Julian was born on January 18, 1929 in Olivia, N.C., the son of Leonard and Stella (Henderson) Phelps. He married the love of his life, Barbara (Benn) Phelps, on January 17, 1954.

He was preceded in death by his wife: Barbara, who passed away on March 2, 2026, and his son: Eugene Phelps, who passed away in 1985.

Julian is survived by his daughter: Gwen Phelps Strong; grandchildren: Julie Nestel, Steve Nestel, Jena Phelps, Brian Phelps, and Nikki Reynolds; and 9 great-grandchildren.

Julian proudly served his country for 21 years in the U.S. Navy and retired from service in 1968. He also worked for the City of Phoenix in the Traffic Engineering Department until he retired.  

Graveside services for both Julian and Barbara will be held on Friday, July 10, 2026 at the Olivia Presbyterian Church cemetery in Olivia, N.C.
