Julia "Cleta" Glennon Obituary

Julia Anacleta (Cleta) Glennon, 90, passed away peacefully on Saturday (September 21, 2024) at Carle Foundation Hospital, Urbana, IL.

Cleta was born on June 7, 1934 in Gary IN to Charles Edmund and Julia Catherine (Visnovsky) Glennon. On November 15, 1952 she married Thomas Joseph Barbercheck at Van Wert OH. The marriage ended August 17, 1973 at Urbana IL.

She is survived by her seven beloved children: daughter, Catherine Helen Barbercheck of Champaign IL; sons, Thomas Michael Barbercheck (Lemah Jo Lamar) of Rosiclare IL; Daniel James Barbercheck of Louisville KY; Paul William Barbercheck (Sandra Kay Shelby) of Webster Groves MO; Richard Stanley Barbercheck (Teresa Piekutowski) of Cincinnati OH; Joseph Patrick Barbercheck, Sr. (Amy Robinson) of Holt, MI; and Michael David Barbercheck (Tracy Badge) of Jupiter FL. Cleta is grandmother to 15 grandchildren and 9 great-grandchildren (still counting).

She is also survived by brothers, Timothy Paul Glennon (Sondra Neihaus) of Roswell GA and Thomas Michael Glennon (Catherine Findley) of Rockford MI, as well as sister, Bridget Marie Roe of Lansing MI. She was preceded in death by her parents, Charles Edmund Glennon (1992) and Julia Catherine (Visnovsky) Glennon (1997); infant brother, Charles James Glennon (1935); sisters, Roberta Ann Glennon (1993); Mary Victoria Schario (2022) and Rose Mary Glennon (2022).

Cleta retired from the University of Illinois Carver Biotechnology Center in 2010. She had previously been employed as operations manager for Bergner Department Store in Joliet IL (1979-1983) and credit manager for Robeson Department Store in Champaign IL (1974-1979).

In 2014, at the age of 80, Cleta received a Bachelor Degree in General Studies from Eastern Illinois University. She graduated Joliet Junior College with an Associate Degree in Accounting in 1988 where she was a charter member and Treasurer of Phi Theta Kappa National Honor Society. She graduated Merrillville High School in Merrillville IN in 1952.

Cleta resided in Shorewood IL for 20 years and was a member of St. Jude Catholic Church in Joliet Il. She served with the Troy Fire Protection District Volunteer Fire Department at Shorewood IL as Certified Firefighter III/EMT-I/D from 1983-1994.

In accordance with her wishes, Cleta’s body will be cremated. Her family will be available to meet with friends at Owens Funeral Home 101 N. Elm Street, Champaign IL on Wednesday, October 2nd between 4 and 6 PM. The Rosary will be prayed at 5:30. A Funeral Mass will be held on Thursday October 3rd at 10 AM at Holy Cross Catholic Church, Champaign IL. Burial will follow immediately after at St. Mary Cemetery in Champaign IL.

In lieu of flowers, the family has requested donations be made to the Holy Cross Tuition Assistance Fund, the St. Vincent de Paul Society, or a charity of donor’s choice.
