John E. Heffernan, 64, of Champaign, died at 7:54 pm on Sat., Jan.6, 2024, just 13 days shy of his 65th birthday, at OSF Hospital, surrounded by his family.
John was the youngest child born to James R. (Junior) and Olive Beals Heffernan on January 19, 1959.
He attended Robeson School, Jefferson and graduated from Champaign Centennial High School in 1977. John played baseball and football in school, and later played with CU Merchants Fast Pitch softball. He attended college in Minnesota. John also loved to bowl with his family and was on many leagues in the Champaign area. John loved all sports and was a Cubs and Packers fan through and through.
John’s siblings are James Stephen (Bonita) Heffernan of Champaign, Robert (Debbie) Heffernan of Savoy, Rita (John) D’Avella of Granger, IN and Barbara Criscoe of Urbana. He had 3 nephews, 4 nieces and several great-nephews and great-nieces. John was proud of his twin daughters, Macy (Tyler) Sakovich of Dewey and Olivia (Tyler) Rogers of Georgia. He also had 3 granddaughters.
John began his work career at Alloy Casting. John then became employed by the Champaign Post Office, where he enjoyed working for 36 years, until his death.
He is preceded in death by his parents, a nephew and a grandson.
Visitation will be Friday, January 19, at Owens Funeral Home, Champaign from 6:00-8:00 p.m. Burial will be Saturday, January 20. at 10:00 at St. Boniface Catholic Church Cemetery located at 416 County Road 1100 N, Seymour, IL.
The family requests that memorials may be given to the American Heart Association or St. Boniface Catholic Church Cemetery Fund.
