John Blacker Obituary
John M. Blacker, 91, of Monticello, passed away at 8:30 AM, Wednesday, May 12, 2010 at the Piatt County Nursing Home, Monticello.
Funeral services will be held at 10:30 AM, Saturday, May 15, 2010 at the Mackey-Wright Funeral Home. Visitation will be from 6:00-8:00 PM Friday, May 14, 2010 at the Mackey-Wright Funeral Home. Interment will be in Monticello Township Cemetery.
John was born September 12, 1918 in White Heath, the son of Park and Florence (Mitchell) Blacker. He married Jeanette C. Steele on April 7, 1949 in Rochelle. She passed away August 26, 2007.
Surviving is his son; Stan (Brenda) Blacker of White Heath, Step-children; Terry (Yvonne) Cresap of Mountain Home, Ark, Sharon Hartsfield of White Heath, and Marcia Cresap of Vista, CA, 10 grandchildren and 11 great grandchildren. John was preceded in death by his parents, wife, 1 brother (Stanley Blacker), 1 sister (Mary Bradbury), 1 grandson, and 1 great granddaughter.
John attended Slabtown School in Piatt County for 8 years and graduated from Monticello High School in 1936. He played football four years for the Sages. After graduation he moved to Chicago and worked for Country Companies Insurance until 1941, he was then drafted into the U.S. Army. Serving in WWII he was assigned to the Americal Division 132nd Infantry deployed to the Guadalcanal Campaign. During the Campaign he was wounded, receiving the Purple Heart and two Bronze Stars. After being discharged from the service, he returned to the family farm in Piatt County. At that time he was appointed rural mail carrier for the White Heath and Mansfield areas, servicing those routes for 30 years, retiring in 1975. John served as president and treasurer for the White Heath Community Club for 17 years, the White Heath Water Board as vice-president, as fire chief and fireman for the White Heath Fire Department for 31 years, also as president for the Monticello High School PTA. He was active in youth programs coaching little league and pony league in both White Heath and Monticello. He was a member of the First Christian Church of Monticello, National Rural Mail Carriers Association, and the Piatt County Farm Bureau. John's greatest gift was his smile and his ability to make everyone feel good in almost any situation. He is loved by many and will be missed greatly by all of us.
