Herman E. Pagel, 98, of Champaign, died at home on the evening of Tuesday, May 23, 2023, surrounded by his family.
There will be a visitation on Friday, May 26 from 10-11 am at Owens Funeral Home, 101 N. Elm St, Champaign. The funeral service will begin at 11:00, followed by burial at Woodlawn Cemetery, Urbana. Military rites will be accorded.
Herman was born on January 21, 1925 in Bible Grove, IL to Everett and Gatha (Reeves) Pagel. He was preceded in death by his 2 wives, Marcella on May 13, 1967 and Doris on November 24, 2019; a son-in-law, Gary Brown; 4 sisters and 3 brothers.
Survivors include 4 children, Mary Beth (Wes) Meyers of Champaign, Ellen (Gary) Funburg of Pana, Stephen (Deborrah) Pagel of Tolono and Tracy (Darrien) Madson of Cayuga, IN; 5 grandchildren; 7 great-grandchildren; 1 sister, Dorothy Cole of Mechanicsburg and 1 brother, Butch Pagel of GA.
Herman honorably served in the US Navy from 1943-1946 and was a proud WWII veteran. Upon discharge, Herman worked as a Floor Mechanic. He worked for Tile Specialists for over 40 years, earning retirement in 1998. In his retirement years, Herman refinished antique furniture, which he sold at Gordyville for over 20 years. He was known for the kitchen items he sold, including black iron skillets and Revere Ware. Herman was also an avid fisherman and an ABC bowling tournament champion.
