Helen J. Elliott

Helen J. Elliott was born February 16, 1913 in Browning, IL to Edith (Markee) and Albert Jones. She married Harry Elliott on July 4, 1937 in Shelbing, MO. They were married in a small ceremony and were part of a chivaree held in their honor and their witnesses honor. They lived in Frederick, IL for many years before Harry passed in Sept. of 1992. Her only son, Robert, passed Dec., 1995. Helen was one of seven children all of whom predecease her. She was brought up on a small subsistence farm in the days when families butchered one hog per year for each member of the family and when clothing was passed down from one child to another.
Survivors include a daughter-in-law, Christy Elliott; two grandchildren, Thomas and Lori; and three great grandchildren.
After high school Helen worked for several area law firms and the Veterans Administration. She ended her work career as a social worker with the IL Department of Public Aid retiring in 1975.
Helen will always be remembered by her family as being a great cook who never used a recipe other than as a starting point for some great meals. Her fried chicken and homemade noodles were excellent. Her fruit pies with the flaky crusts will never be forgotten. She will be remembered by her grandchildren as one who would play their games, take them shopping, and one who took them on outings in the woods to be followed by a meal around the campfire. She will be remembered by her nieces and nephews as one who was good to them and encouraged them when they were children. She always seemed to know what activities they would enjoy and what activities their children would enjoy.
In her social life she was an excellent bridge player, loved to travel, and one who enjoyed camping with family and friends. She didnt do the fishing but she sure knew how to make them taste good. She spent several winters in Texas prior to her husbands passing and definitely enjoyed the camaraderie that was to be found with the other snowbirds from the Midwest.
Helen was a very practical woman being one of those who survived the depression of the 1930s. She was the type of person you could call a survivor and one who helped instill those qualities in others.
A graveside service honoring Helen will be held at 3:00 PM, Wednesday December 10, 2008 at the Rushville City Cemetery in Rushville, IL with the Rev. John Sowers officiating. Mackey-Wright Funeral Home in Monticello is handling the arrangements. Memorials may be made to the Rushville Veterans Memorial or an organization of the donors choice.
