Harold W. Hawkins died on August 27, 2007, at Monticello. Mr. Hawkins was born on July 12, 1926, in Paoli, Indiana, the son of Charles and Sarah (Riley) Hawkins. He married Willie T. Kee on October 15, 1944, in Paoli. From this marriage were born two sons who survive, Michael (Carla) of Monticello and Thomas (Janet) of Centralia. After the death of his first wife in 1997, Mr. Hawkins married Dolores M. Williams on March 8, 2003, and she survives in Monticello. Also surviving is step-son, Greg (Dedra) Williams of Urbana, and grandchildren Tracy and Pat Tieman of Bement, Nathan and Emily Hawkins of Wheaton and Caleb Hawkins of Centralia. Other family members include: siblings Reba Farlow, Norma Hollen and Fred Hawkins, all of Paoli, Indiana, six step-grandchildren and five step-great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by two sisters and two brothers.
Mr. Hawkins served in the U.S. Army of Occupation in the Pacific during World War II and was a life member of the American Legion and the VFW. He was a longtime member of the Monticello First Christian Church having served the congregation for many years as a deacon and elder and helped build the facilities which the church now enjoys.
Mr. Hawkins came to Illinois from Indiana in 1948 and worked on various farms, most notably, the V.T. Walsh Farms. He later worked at the University of Illinois and retired in 1990 as a maintenance inspector. He enjoyed gardening, hunting, fishing and spending time with his family. Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society and Kirby Hospital.
Funeral services will be held at 10:00 AM on Friday, August 31, 2007, at the Mackey-Wright Funeral Home in Monticello with the Rev. Jim Dalrymple officiating. Visitation will be held from 6:00 8:00 PM on Thursday, August 30, 2007, at the Mackey-Wright Funeral Home and also one hour prior to service. Interment will be held in the Monticello Township Cemetery with Military Graveside Rites.
