Gary R. Lietz, 66, of Champaign passed away at home Tuesday (Nov. 6, 2018) with his family by his side.
He is survived by his daughter, Emily (William) Vliek of East Lansing, Mich., and son, Jordan (Devin Richardson) Lietz of Champaign; grandsons, William and Charlie Vliek; brothers, Greg (Marie) Lietz and Ronald Lietz; father-in-law, Philip Mitchell; and many nieces, nephews and cousins, as well as his granddogs, Henry and Granger.
Gary was preceded in death by his wife, Peggy (Mitchell) Lietz; parents, Dr. Gerald S. Lietz and Kathryn Z. Lietz; and mother-in-law, Annie (Pruitt) Mitchell.
Gary graduated from Champaign Central High School (1969), Denison University (1973) and went on to John Marshall Law School and graduated with his J.D. (1976). He was admitted to the Illinois Bar in 1977 and practiced law for the entirety of his career in Champaign, primarily at his practice of Lietz, Banner and Ford.
Gary was a devoted husband to Peggy, and they enjoyed spending time with their many close friends and family. Gary took pride in being an involved father who was a constant support to his children. He received great joy in becoming a grandfather and enjoyed spending time with his grandsons, be it in Illinois, Michigan or Disney World.
Gary’s sense of humor and wit were will known to those close to him. Friendships and family relationships were central to Gary and Peggy’s life.
Our family’s apologies are extended to Brooks Brothers, Disney Corporation and the authors of the “Dummy” books for their loss of future revenue. Since Gary passed away on Election Day, we of course remember with a smile one of his most used phrases, “What a country!”
Gary will be laid to rest with his wife in First Presbyterian Church of Champaign Memorial Gardens. A memorial service will be held Friday, Nov. 9, 2018, at First Presbyterian Church, 302 W. Church St., Champaign, at 1 p.m. Immediately following the service, friends may greet the family for a coffee and tea reception in Westminster Hall at the church.
Donations may be made to Crisis Nursery, 1309 W. Hill St., Urbana, or Canaan Development Foundation, 404 W. Main St., Urbana, IL 61801
