Eugene Gray Obituary

Eugene W. Gray, age 88, of Monticello, Ill., died Saturday, October 28, 2006, at Carle Foundation Hospital in Urbana, Ill.

Funeral service will be held at 11:00 AM, Friday, November 3, 2006 at the Monticello United Methodist Church 212 S. Independence St., Monticello with Rev. Michael Eischen officiating. Graveside Military Rites by the Hamm-Burke American Legion Post #101 of Monticello. Visitation will be from 4:00 to 9:00 PM, Thursday, November 2, 2006 at the Mackey-Wright Funeral Home in Monticello. Interment will be in the Monticello Township Cemetery in Monticello, Ill.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Monticello American Legion and the Monticello Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW)

Mr. Gray was born February 11, 1918 in Mansfield, Ill. the son of William Vincent and Bonnie Doon (Woodard) Gray. He married Jessie A. Stratton on November 26, 1940 in Palmyra, MO. She passed away April 20, 1994 in Monticello, Ill.

Surviving are Daughter; Darla Purcell of Wildwood, MO., 2 grandchildren; Laura and Meredith Purcell, and Sister; Norma Booty of Monticello, Ill.

He was preceded in death by his Parents, Wife and 1 Sister (Juanita Higgins).

Mr. Gray was co-owner of Gene and Jacks Bi-Rite Grocery Store and Red Fox Grocery Store in Monticello. He served in the U.S. Army during WW II. He was a member of the Monticello United Methodist Church, the Monticello Masonic Lodge #58 AF&AM, Combat Infantrymens Association, American Legion, VFW, and Charter member of the WW II Memorial in Washington, D.C.
