Dorothy Marie Miller, 91 of Monticello, passed away at 5:12
AM on Sunday, July 20, 2008 at the Piatt County Nursing Home.
Funeral services will be held at the Monticello Presbyterian Church at 2:00 PM on Thursday, July 24 with Rev. Tim Bauler officiating.
Visitation will be from 4:00 7:00 PM on Wednesday, July 23 at the Mackey-Wright Funeral Home. Internment will be at the Monticello Township Cemetery.
Dorothy was born June 19, 1917 in Oakley, Illinois. Her parents were Marie and Reed Holcomb.
She married Robert C. Miller February 19, 1938. Surviving is her husband and four children: Tom (Linda) Miller of Monticello, Illinois; Tim (Karlene) Miller of Peoria, Illinois; Tamara (Bill) Abbott, Monticello, Illinois and Trudi (Jeff) Turnbull, Tremont, Illinois. She also has 8 grandchildren and 12 great grandchildren. She is survived by sisters Harriett Maxwell and Lois Sheehan.
Dorothy spent much of her long life serving others by being an active member of many organizations. Among these activities were Boy Scout Den Mother, Brownie Troupe leader, PTA president, Treasurer of Piatt County Cancer drive, and president of the Kirby Hospital Auxiliary.
As longtime member of the Presbyterian Church, she served as a Sunday school teacher, choir member, deacon, and president of the church Womens club.
Dorothy was well known as one of Monticellos most loyal Sage and Fighting Illini fans. She was present at over 4,000 games over a period of nearly 70 years. In 1997, she was inducted into the Illinois High School Basketball Hall of Fame. In a very fitting honor, the Monticello School Board renamed the Washington School Gym the Robert and Dorothy Miller Gymnasium in 1999.
Over 100 Monticello High School basketball players have one of her basketball scorebooks. This meant hours and hours of making duplicate books. Every shot made and missed, free throws made and missed, fouls, score by quarters, game totals, and even shooting percentagesunbelievable.
Memorial contributions may be made to the First Presbyterian Church or to the Piatt County Nursing Home.
