Donald L. Deering

Donald L. Deering, Monticello, passed away May 19, 2009, in his home after a nine month illness. A memorial service to celebrate his life will be held on Saturday, May 30, 2009, at 11:00 am at the Mackey-Wright Funeral Home in Monticello with Chaplain Phyllis Howley officiating. Visitation will be held one hour prior to the service. Cremation rites were accorded. Memorials may be made to the Piatt County Animal Shelter.

Don was born July 16, 1932, in Litchfield, IL, a son of Charles and Eva Deering. He married Judy Edmonson July 22, 1955. Don joined the U.S. Army after attending Bement High School where he was a basketball standout, and was honorably discharged in 1953. He retired from the Norfolk and Southern (Wabash) Railroad as an Engineer in 1992. After retirement he kept busy doing various odd jobs and especially enjoyed painting houses.

Trapshooting was Dons longtime hobby. He enjoyed traveling extensively to attend trapshoots wherever he could. The Brittany Gun Club, near Litchfield, was a favorite. Don was a lifetime member of the ATA and the Illini Indians. He enjoyed visiting with good friends from Monticello and Bement, Caseys, The Pub, Lincoln School and with fellow trapshooters.

Don is survived by his wife; daughters Cheryl (Kevin) Gill, St. Louis, and Karen Deering, Monticello; grandsons Brad and Curtis Gill; sister Mary (Bob) Stickrod, Monticello; several nieces, nephews and cousins; and his constant companion and beloved dog Sophie. Dons parents and one brother preceded him in death.
