David Erland Goethe, 89, of Mahomet, Illinois, passed away on January 17 after a courageous battle with cancer.
Dave proudly served in the U.S. Marines as a pilot flying the AD-Skyraider and made the best of being stationed in Hawaii. He returned from the service to earn a degree in electrical engineering then established a career with McDonnell Douglas working on airplanes. Six years ago, he moved from the St. Louis, MO area to Mahomet, IL to be closer to family. He enjoyed golfing, birdwatching, gardening and small town living. He was a passionate St. Louis Blues fan, an avid antiques collector, staunch supporter of the arts and skilled woodworker - building many family heirlooms that will be cherished for generations.
He was preceded in death by his first wife Suzanne (Compton), brother Tom, and sister Eleanor (Helwig). Dave is survived by Joyce, his devoted wife of 30 years; his three children, Andy Goethe (Paula) of Mahomet, IL, Lisa McGinn (Gregg) of La Grange Park, IL, Matt Goethe (Tina) of La Grange Park, IL; two step-children; Carl Stiebel (Kim) of Kennesaw, GA and Laura Sherburn (Larry) of New Port Richey, FL; seven grandchildren, Cassandra Hart (Kyle), Cameron Goethe, Shannen McGinn, Danny McGinn, Ryan Stiebel, Eric Stiebel, Danielle Stiebel; and three great-grandchildren, Kye and Josephine Hart and Jaden Stiebel.
A memorial to celebrate his life, love and generous spirit will be held at 12:00 on Saturday, March 4 at Blair-Owens Funeral Home (102 East Dunbar Street) Mahomet. Friends may greet the family at the visitation one hour prior to the service. Military burial rites will be accorded by American Legion Post #1015.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Dave’s name to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.
