Burney A. Wickstrom, 88 of Monticello, passed away on Monday, February 23, 2009 at 7:20 AM at Carle Hospital in Urbana.
Funeral service will be held at 2:00 PM, Thursday, February 26, 2009 at the Mackey-Wright Funeral Home in Monticello with Rev. Tim Bauler officiating. Visitation will be held from 6:00-8:00 PM, Wednesday, February 25, 2009 at the Mackey-Wright Funeral Home. Burial will be in Bement Township Cemetery.
Burney was born on May 18, 1920, in Ladysmith, WI, the son of Bror A. and Mattie (Levings) Wickstrom. He married Velva Tate on August 23, 1953 in Bement.
Surviving is his wife; Velva Wickstrom of Monticello. He was preceded in death by his parents, one brother, and one nephew.
Mr. Wickstrom graduated from Ladysmith High School. He was a U.S. Army Corps veteran of five years on the west coast and in Hawaii. He attended Monmouth College and graduated from the University of Wyoming; also doing graduate studies at the Universities of Minnesota and Illinois. Mr. Wickstrom was a teacher and coach at Griggsville Junior High, Bloomer High School in Wisconsin, Bement Unit 5, Glenbard East High School and Champaign Unit 4 schools. He worked with student teachers from the University of Illinois and Eastern Illinois University and received the Cooperative Elementary Teacher Award from EIU. Mr. Wickstrom was a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Bement. Burney enjoyed golfing, he was an avid reader, and enjoyed sports of all kinds.
