Bill Gingerich Obituary

William (Bill) David Gingerich, 79, passed away peacefully on April 1, 2025 at OSF Heart of Mary Medical Center in Urbana, Illinois. Bill was born on April 19, 1945, in Tonica, Illinois. The youngest son of Ruby and Rudy Gingerich. He graduated from Tonica High School in 1963 and enlisted in the United States Air Force and served in Vietnam. After his service he attended Illinois Valley Community College and then the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign. Bill graduated in 1971, majoring in English.

Survived by his wife Kay (Butler) Gingerich of 38 years, sons David Gingerich (Kim) and Mark Gingerich (Jennifer) both of Kentucky, daughter Kristina Miller (Bryan) of Champaign, step-daughters Camille Brown of Champaign and Kelly Brown Hoberman (Eric) of Wilmette, Illinois. Bill leaves behind 6 grandkids, 3 bonus-grandkids, and several nieces and nephews.

Bill was preceded in death by his parents, both brothers Gerald and Dennis, sister-in-law Jan, and two nephews.

Bill was active in the Barbershoppers and the Cubmaster of Cub Scout Pack 11 in Champaign in 1970s and 1980s. Bill was involved in Ambucs, and in 1986 was president of the C-U Ambucs. He belonged to the Elks of Urbana, American Legion of Urbana, and the V.F.W. of Urbana. Bill and Kay have spent the last 16 harsh Illinois winters traveling to Harlingen, Texas where the activity of choice was golf.

In accordance with Bill’s wishes, he will be cremated and friends may greet the family from noon to 4:00pm on April 12, 2025 at the Champaign Urbana Elks Lodge #2497, 903 N. Dunlap Ave. in Savoy. Military Honors will be accorded at 1:00 by VFW #5520, followed by a short Memorial Service and lunch will be available.

The family would like to express how grateful they are for the amazing doctors, nurses, and staff at the at OSF Heart of Mary Medical Center in Urbana, OSF Sacred Heart Medical Center in Danville, and Danville VA Medical Center.

The family asks for In Memory donations to the Champaign Urbana Elks Lodge #2497 or the Greater Champaign County Ambucs.
