Alice Phillips Obituary
Alice L. Miller Phillips, 88, of Monticello, passed away at 1:05 PM on Sunday, August 28, 2011, at Carle Hospital, Urbana.
Alice was born March 5, 1923 in Champaign, Illinois to Alvin C. and Minnie Jones Miller. She married Francis W. Phillips on February 21, 1942. He survives along with their three children: Joy Rathe of Monticello, Illinois; Ken (Wendy) Phillips of OFallon, Illinois; and Julie (Dennis) Quimby of Hopewell, Illinois.
Also surviving are 6 grandchildren and 9 great-grandchildren, one brother: Robert Miller of Monticello and one sister: Elenor Anderson of Monticello. She was preceded in death by her parents and three sisters.
Alice attended U of I in the fall of 1941. In 1943 she graduated from Mosher Business College in Chicago and was then employed with Merrill, Lynch, Pierce, Fenner & Bean in the Chicago Board of Trade building. After Francis was discharged from the Navy in December 1945 they returned to the Monticello area. In 1946, they moved to Bement where they led a very active community and church life as members of the Bement Presbyterian Church. In 1955, she designed the winning entry for the Bement Centennial Seal. Her early artwork appeared in the Bement Centennial book. She then began her career in art by taking the Famous Artists courses. When the Bement Art Club was formed, she became an active member taking lessons from Monticello High School teacher, Frank Mula. Alice designed the milk carton that was used by the Country Charm Dairy for many years. After moving to Monticello in the summer of 1958, she became a member of the Monticello Art Club. Her award-winning work was displayed in the Champaign restaurant, Magnum Decum, and various Illinois State Fairs. She continued learning and perfecting her techniques with instruction from Billy Jackson, U of I professor. Alice was secretary for the Monticello Presbyterian Church from 1965-1970. In 1973, she began developing a very successful Shaklee business where she and Francis attained the rank of Coordinator and received 9 bonus cars. They enjoyed their home on Circle Drive for 51 years until they moved to Tatman Village in September 2009.
Visitation will be held from 1:00-2:00 PM, Tuesday, August 30, 2011 at the Mackey-Wright Funeral Home, 215 E. Washington St. Monticello. The funeral service will follow at 2:00 PM with Rev. Tim Bauler officiating. Interment will be held in Monticello Township Cemetery.
Memorials may be made to Tatman Village or charity of the donors choice.
