Albert J. Spohrer, 96, formerly of Mahomet, died at 3:37pm on Saturday August 2 at his home in Champaign.
There will be a visitation from 5:00-7:00 on Thursday August 7 at Owens Funeral Home (101 N. Elm St.) in Champaign, with a Wake Service at 7:00. The Funeral Mass will be at 10:00 on Friday August 8 at St. Matthew Catholic Church (1303 Lincolnshire Dr.) in Champaign. Interment will be at Mt. Hope Mausoleum in Champaign. Military burial rites will be accorded by VFW #5520 Color Guard.
Al was born on January 29, 1929 in Norton, Kansas a son of Roy and Nellie (Dolan) Spohrer. He married Glenis Shirley on September 6, 1952 in Winfield, KS. She died on October 6, 2004.
He later married Sherleen Scheibly on October 9, 2010 in Champaign. She survives and resides in Champaign.
Other survivors include: six sons, Henry (Gail), Tom (Mary), Charles (Darleen), George (Kim), James (Maryann) and Fr. Dennis Spohrer; many grandchildren and several great-grandchildren.
He is preceded in death by one son, Ron, three brothers and three sisters.
Al was very active with the local Catholic community and has been a member of St. Matthew, Holy Cross and Our Lady of the Lake. He is a member of the Knights of Columbus and has been a 4th Degree Knight since 2007. When his sons were younger, he was very active as a Boy Scout Leader and was always proud that all of his boys earned the Eagle Scout Award. Al believed in physical fitness and was an avid runner all of his life. He was a proud Veteran and served as an Army Medic and Registered Nurse from 1954-1956. He retired from Carle Clinic as a Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist.
