William "Bill" Anderson, 93, of Champaign died at 6:02 a.m. March 31, 2018. at Clark-Lindsey Village in Urbana.
There will be a visitation from 4 to 7 p.m. Friday, April 6, at Owens Funeral Home (101 N. Elm St.) in Champaign. The funeral service will be at 10 a.m. Saturday, April 7, at the funeral home. Burial will be at Grandview Memorial Gardens in Champaign. Military honors will be accorded by VFW Post #5520.
Bill was born on Sept. 10, 1924, in Chatsworth, a son of Emmett and Nora (Capps) Anderson. He married Doris on April 6, 1947. She died on Feb. 28, 2000.
Survivors include longtime girlfriend, Pat Mast of Urbana; and one sister, Sara Ann Rasner of Savoy. Bill was preceded in death by two brothers, Paul and James Anderson; and four sisters, Florence Pinter, Willa Mae Kendig, Shirley Anderson and Mary Thompson.
Bill was a proud veteran and joined the Army as a teenager. He served in the 1st Infantry Division and was in the first wave on Omaha Beach during the historic D-Day invasion. During the War, he actively participated in many battles and was honored to help liberate a prison.
Bill was always active with Veteran's organizations. Locally, he was Commander of the Disabled American Veteran's Chapter and Captain of the VFW Post #5520 Color Guard.
