Maurice 'Doc' Mecum, 90, of Champaign died at home on the morning of Sunday, March 11, 2018.
There will be a visitation on Wednesday, March 14 from 5-7 pm at Owens Funeral Home, 101 N. Elm, Champaign. The graveside funeral service will take place on Thursday, March 15 at Camp Butler National Cemetery, Springfield at 1:00pm. Full military rites will be accorded.
Doc was born on April 24, 1927 in Carthage, a son of Chester and Abigail (Weaver) Mecum. He married Nina Smith on April 17, 1947.
He is survived by his wife, Nina of Champaign; 2 sons, Tim (Sharlene) Mecum of Mansfield and Kip (Karen) Mecum of Montrose, CO; 9 grandchildren, Pike (Tara), Matt (Michelle), Kristy (Paul), Ann (Charles), Jennifer, Katie (Judd), Katie (Kevin), Scott (Carolina) and Betsy (Shawn); 6 great-grandchildren; 3 great-great grandchildren and 1 sister, Jane Thornton of Springfield.
Maurice honorably served in the US Navy after he completed high school. Upon discharge he began his career in Fire Service with the University of Illinois Fire Department. He attained the rank of Fire Chief in 1968 and retired in 1981. Throughout his life Doc was an active youth mentor, volunteering his time as a little league and basketball coach. In his retirement years Doc enjoyed golfing, hunting and horse packing trips in the mountains of SW Colorado. Doc and his wife, Nina were longtime members of First United Methodist Church in Champaign. Doc was a proud NRA member and a 3rd degree Mason.
