Marjorie Nelson Obituary

Marjorie E. Nelson, 89, died on the evening of Sunday, December 30, 2018 at Carle Foundation Hospital, Urbana, surrounded by her family.

There will be a visitation on Sunday, Jan. 6 from 2-4 pm at Owens Funeral Home, 101 N. Elm St, Champaign. The funeral Mass will be on Monday, Jan. 7 at 11 am at St. Matthew Catholic Church, 1303 Lincolnshire Dr, Champaign with Fr. Lee Brokaw officiating. Burial will be at Woodlawn Cemetery, Urbana.

Marjorie was born on Jan. 11, 1929 in Urbana, the only daughter of Basil and Betty (McFall) Reynolds. Many years after her mother's death Marjorie's father married Rosemary Rubenacker. Marjorie married William Nelson, on June 12, 1948 in Urbana.  Marjorie was preceded in death by her husband on Jan. 23, 1989 and by her son, Jerry Nelson on April 23, 2011.

Survivors include 4 children; Susan (Terry) Holleman of Champaign; Michael (Karen) Nelson of Champaign, Bill (Janice) Nelson of Danville and Patrick (Debbie) Nelson of Bondville; 12 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; and 1 step-brother, Brian Reynolds.

Marjorie graduated from Urbana High in 1947 and then continued her education at IL Commercial College. After completing college, her first job was at the U of I as a secretary. She went on to work as a teacher’s aide in Urbana and Champaign schools and later at Sears in the catalog department, where she worked until retirement. Most recently, Marjorie was the co-owner of Patrick Nelson Enterprises.

Marjorie was strong in her faith and was a devout Catholic. Thru the years she had been a parishioner at St. Mary’s, Holy Cross and most recently, St. Matthews. Marjorie was a loving woman had a heart of gold. She was dedicated to her family, had a great love for dogs and for the St. Louis Cardinals.


In keeping with Marjorie’s passion for animals, the family asks that in lieu of flowers, donations be made to the Champaign County Humane Society, 1911 E. Main St, Urbana, IL 61802.
