Dr. Gilbert R. "Gib" Salvatore Williamson (94) of Mahomet died at home on Friday, Jan. 4, 2019.
A funeral Mass will be held at 10 a.m. Friday, Jan. 11, at Our Lady of the Lake Catholic Church, 501 W. State St., Mahomet. There will be no visitation. Burial will be in St. Boniface Cemetery, Seymour. Blair-Owens Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
Dr. Williamson was born in Weirton, W.Va., on April 2, 1924, a son of Luigi Salvatore Williamson and Anna Santa Lucia Williamson. He married Carole Sue Gallant on May 3, 1963, in Ada, Ohio. She survives.
Also surviving are three daughters, Beth Rynke of Robinson. Jackie (David) Dimmitt of St. Louis and Christine (Jeff) Saniat of Champaign. He is also survived by three grandchildren, Sarah Rynke, Nick Dimmitt and Zoe Dimmitt. He was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers and a sister.
Williamson earned degrees in civil engineering from Ohio Northern University in 1952, University of New Mexico in 1958, and Carnegie-Melon in 1969. He was a registered engineer and surveyor in Ohio and West Virginia, and worked in building construction for 10 years, taught civil engineering for eight years, and worked as a construction materials researcher for 22 years. He retired from the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Construction Engineering Research Laboratory, Champaign, in 1991.
He served three years with the U.S. Marine Corps during World War ll, primarily with the Third Marine Air Wing where he was an electrician and turret mechanic on the B-25 aircraft.
