Shukhan Ng, 53, of Champaign died in her home on April 3, 2024.
Shukhan met her husband, Joel Fletcher, in 2014, and they married earlier this year. He survives.
Also surviving are her mother, Suet Ping Lai; older brothers, Chiu-Chung Ng and Siu-Chung Ng; a sister-in-law; nieces and nephews, all from China; Joel’s family; and many friends.
She was preceded in death by her father, Man Yuen Ng and her older sister, Sau Han Ng.
Shukhan was born in Hong Kong Oct. 27, 1970. She learned several languages before coming to the U.S., where she received her PhD in linguistics from the City University of New York. In 2014, she came to the University of Illinois as a post-doctoral research fellow. After a brief period in private industry, Shukhan returned to the UI to work as a data analyst. Her work included examination of neurological and cognitive processes involved in literacy and bilingualism, the effects of aging on language comprehension, the effects of literacy on cognitive aging and environmental factors affecting prenatal health. Shukan was a valued colleague and a caring mentor.
Shukhan loved tennis, travel, board games, cooking, reading, kayaking and hiking. She had a sharp wit and a playful sense of humor. Shukhan was kind, pragmatic, thoughtful and driven by curiosity. She will be sorely missed.
Visitation will be at Owens Funeral Home, 101 N. Elm St., Champaign at 9 a.m. Friday with a memorial service at 10 a.m.
