Mary Theresa McMahon, 94, of Champaign, died at home surrounded by her children on the morning of Friday, April 12, 2024.
There will be a visitation on Friday, April 19 from 4-6 pm at Owens Funeral Home, 101 N. Elm St, Champaign. Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Saturday, April 20 at 10 am at St. Boniface Catholic Church, Seymour. Burial will immediately follow at St. Boniface Cemetery.
Mary was born on April 15,1929 in Ivesdale to Joseph and Nellie (Snyder) Schumacher. She was always proud of her German and farming heritage and reminisced often about her childhood on the family farm. Mary married William McMahon on August 8,1953 at St. Boniface Catholic Church. Together they raised their 8 children in Champaign.
Bill preceded Mary in death on April 19, 2010. Other family members that preceded her include a daughter, Linda; 2 sons-in-law, Michael Wesolowski and Charles Trader; 2 sisters and 1 brother.
Survivors include 7 children, Michael (Julie) McMahon, Theresa Trader, Kathleen (Bob) McMahon, Ellen (Brian) Christie, Daniel (Diane) McMahon, Timothy (Molly) McMahon, Maureen (Carson) McMahon; 13 grandchildren and 9 great-grandchildren.
Mary and her family were longtime parishioners at Holy Cross Catholic Church. Mary was actively involved in volunteering at her children's school and sports activities and also gave of her time to the Catholic Daughter's of America. Mary enjoyed playing golf in the “Lady Nine-Hole" league, couples bowling league and Bridge club. She was also an avid Illini and Cubs fan.
After her children were raised, Mary and Bill enjoyed traveling. They cruised in Alaska, visited Ireland and Trinidad, and spent time in Florida and Montana. Her favorite trips involved family and friends, particularly summers in Tomahawk, WI. Family was everything to Mary and that was always her focus in life.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations may be made to Holy Cross School in Champaign, Saint Boniface Cemetery Fund, or a charity of your choice.
